The compilatory and biographical book “De Cajón”, about Caitro Soto, also tells the story of the Cajón as a musical instrument.

In its content there are multiple historical references of the “Afro-Peruvian” population, referring to Caitro as “The elf” of that denomination. The musical sounds characteristic of Peruvian music with marked African descent, come from the rattle, dry pacae, jaw, Chinese curtain, güiro, keys, tumbadoras, shéquere, cowbell and of course the Cajón. Soto met Chabuca Granda in 1957, composer of songs like “La Flor de la Canela” and Peruvian singer of Creole music, beginning to work with her in 1961. After participating in festivals and giving international tours, in 1969 they decided to form the group “Perú Negro”. That same year, an article about the first appearances of the Cajón appeared in the newspaper of his country “El Comercio”:

“The chroniclers who saw the blacks dancing on religious festivities until the middle of the 19th century – Corpus – or in their own Lima brotherhoods only mention the rhythm of open membranophones as the only type of orchestra. (The Cajón for the celebration is relatively new as for its choreography, all the current versions are arbitrary creations, born in the so-called “folk academies”) “…
… “Despite the capricious confections prevailing, we believe that the dimensions of the ideal Cajón should be, approximately, the following: a parallelepiped of 50 by 30 centimeters in front by 25 in. The wood of the four sides should have a wait of half an inch brushed, being the front or face -where the hands percussion- a thin plywood of three sheets that make four millimeters thick in total. The inner plate, opposite the face, should have a thickness of three eighths of an inch, This internal face or “back” of the drawer, brings to the center an opening to exit the sound, if this opening is circular, it will have a diameter of 11 centimeters, if triangular, of 15 centimeters per side, the junction of the six sheets of wood that forms the box is practiced with nails, the finish being a patent leather hand in natural color.
Currently, it is the guitar makers themselves who build the best boxes, but, like the string instrument, using the same technique and materials draw sonorous boxes and “silent” ones. A matter of luck.”
